By leadpipe58 (P.A. U.S.A.)
I use the TV for both my computer monitor and cable TV.It does both very well. The picure is great and it is very versitle. There are plenty of inputs for any thing you want to use it for.

The only 2 cons.1 the sound is poor, external speakers are a must.2 the remote works slowly.

It is great for gaming!

If you own a PS3 and want to connect it to this TV, DON'T BUY THIS TV. I also have issues with the PS3 Blu-ray player even with Composite cables. It is extremely frustrating. I bought a $900 + TV and I am only able to use it to watch HD programming through cable. Beware!!!!!

"Give me a second chance!" 2009-08-08
By J. S. Mansill (Whangarei, New Zealand)
I found that out of the box the picture was very poor, tried all the preset picture modes (Vivid, Standard, Cinema etc) still crap. However, once I adjusted the individual settings, i.e. turned the sharpness way down and modified colour and backlight, the picture was outstanding. So different in fact I could not believe it was the same TV. I watch alot of HD sport and blu-ray movies at a viewing distance of 12 feet and can not fault it for the money. No image "fox-trailing"/image blur. Don't get me wrong I would have loved to have brought Panasonic 1080p plasma for better contrast ratio but could not afford or justify the extra money. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - just don't trust the preset picture settings. My fav settings, Backlight 21 - Contrast 79 - Brightness 62 - Color 75 - Sharpness 0 - Tint G7

 "poor quality or defective" 2009-06-12
By Dave W (Los Angeles, CA)
I ordered this TV based on the reviews and I was disappointed. The TV was fuzzy in spots, but not enough for me to be sure it was defective. However, based on this reviews, i assume it has to be. The HDTV channels are clear except for certain areas are blurry. Edges around graphics sometimes come in blurry. Especially bad with sports programming. The non HDTV channels came in worse than my old tube TV. I had cable come to check the connection, no issues there. I plugged it in to where I haave another hdtv (which works great) and it was blurry there too.

I returned it and ordered the Panasonic plasma G10 - it's on its way.

"Great picture - not that great sound" 2009-05-18
By Casey
This is the first HD tv I have ever purchased, but I have lived with roommates for over 4 years that have owned HD tvs the entire time.

I am very satisfied with the picture on this TV (for the price). The blacks looks very deep, and TimeWarner cable looks awesome, as do xbox 360 games and BluRay discs.

My only gripe is the sound. Sometimes I have to turn it up near the maximum volume of 100 to hear things properly, and the speakers have a very noticeable rattle to them, even when they are not cranked all the way up.

I got a killer deal on this TV around Christmas time, and I'm planning to hook up surround sound to eliminate the quiet/rattling speakers problem, so overall I'm very satisfied.

"WARNING!!! DO NOT BUY THIS TV!" 2010-02-19
By Kristina Evans
These TVs will last as little as 8 months. I bought a 42 inch 720p from Amazon in April of 2008. Within 10 months, the TV developed a solid line down the left side - LCD panel was shot. Even with the TV under warranty, I had difficulties with Toshiba to even get them to send someone to my house to address the issue, terrible customer service! After almost two months and the inability of Toshiba to supply enough replacement parts to their service centers to meet demand (because so many customers LCDs were going bad) they finally did the right thing and got me this model as a replacement. That was in March of 2009. Now after only 11 months, the brand new TV will not even turn on. My warranty expired because it was a replacement and only lasted 1 year from the original purchase date of the first TV. If you think I'm over reacting, please google on ["Toshiba LCD" "Yellow LED" flashes 3 times]. The repair bill costs up to $800. Toshiba does not acknowledge that they have a quality issue with these TVs and refuses to help their victims. I believe there may be a class action suit in the works.

And oh yeah, I bought a toshiba DVD player only 14 months ago, and it is already acting up. I will never buy another Toshiba product. DO NOT CONTINUE TO ENCOURAGE MANUFACTURERS to CONTINUE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR by GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY!

TOSHIBA 42RV535U LCD

I bought this TV from Amazon.com. The delivery company was great.

I got this TV about six months ago and it has been performing great since I installed it.

Since I purchased the Toshiba, I bought a Samsung 120Hz for another room. The Samsung certainly has a superior picture, but not for twice the price. If you're not hung-up on 120Hz, I think this is an equal. I think I like the user controls on the Toshiba better than the Samsung.

I dont't think you can go wrong with this TV...

"Research this dog on the net and DON'T BUY It!" 2009-06-14
By PenMangler (alabama, US of A)
I bought this tv from a retailer. 14 months later, the tv would not return to ready after a SHORT power outage. The yellow standby light just blinked three times over and over. The manual said this was normal and when it was ready to start it would go to a green light. No it wouldn't. Manual and Toshiba site said to hold the power button on the cabinet in for five seconds and it would reset it. This worked...twice. The Toshiba site said unplug it for an hour. This worked...once. Now at 18 months, a short power outage from a summer storm knocked it back to the yellow lights. After four days, it is still blinking yellow. I tried every trick I could find short of putting socks and shoes on it. I found this is a common problem with this model. The store will evaluate the problem for $189. The repair to the board that has gone south is $600 parts and labor. Again, I am not the only victim of this shoddy equipment. Toshiba basically told me they weren't concerned with it since it's out of warranty. So, research the model on the net and see for youself. If you have one of these, be scanning the ads for a new tv soon, it will fail. Toshiba says they won't order a recall since the model has been replaced with this new one you're looking at now. The new one has the same boards. $1300 dollars for 18 months service.

I'm the type of person who does research before I make a large purchase; I go to a store and see products in person then I get on the Internet and read the reviews. That is why I am so happy with my new REGZA TV. The color is beautiful and, even though I don't have an HD receiver, the picture is very clear. It is also user friendly.

"Dont look any further buy this model" 2009-04-22
By John W. Utter
I buy and sell tv's part time outside my day job. So over the last 10 years I have seen a large number of good and bad models. First I rate the following brands as my top 5 starting with the best at the top. Samsung, Hitachi, Soney, Toshibia, JVC. Now JVC can take a big jump to the top here and there with some of there price deals. Anyway I purchased the Toshibia. For the money, the features and the quality you can not go wrong. Did you know 2/3 service calls for lcd tv's are for Visio. Be aware also that 2/3 service calls for lcd tv's in ANY brand are for power related issues. This happens to any tv of any brand, so a review that says the power went out after x ammount of time is simply not a fair review. In fact to since I repair Tv's as well I can tell you that Power fluctuations such as "Browning effect" will ruin any tv no matter what brand you stick in your home. Anyway this TV model is one of the best out there. 120hz, great picture and fab HD. Did you know that Toshibia TV's upconvert regular analog signal? This is one of the few tvs that attempt to do this all the time. Most DVD HD or Blue ray players will do this , but this tv does that on your cable signal. To be fair almost all hd tvs will do 1080i signal. This is a great buy

"No regrets, an overall bargain" 2010-03-02
By DIYer
I purchased via a different online vendor (sale plus another discount paid for the shipping) - the TV's box was well-packed with Styrofoam and the box took a beating (ala UPS) - but no damage to the unit. I've had the unit about 3 weeks and thus far, I have no complaints - nor do I expect any (fingers crossed, of course). As another reviewer noted, the remote is basic - very basic, but functional. I too was slightly disappointed with a few of the input limitations, however there are a host of alternatives with which to tinker :) I'm not particularly impressed with the stand - it "looks" nice, but it sure doesn't feel very stable - the base is plastic, a rather thin-feeling plastic, at least to me. If the unit is never going to be moved, I suspect it's a safe set-up, however if there is any chance of the thing being moved regularly (e.g., plugging items into the back where all the input jacks are housed) or perhaps reachable by small children, I'd vote for securing the thing to the wall or whatever it is housed in - just to be safe.

The picture is as clear as any other 1080's I've seen, but I haven't viewed my unit right next to another, therefore my observation is just that, my personal observation. The sound is much better than I expected - at times I've caught myself looking over my shoulder or similar as I've heard the "smaller sounds" quite clearly - a crackle of a tree branch has made me look to see what I broke or dropped :)

Sure, I wished the remote and the units itself had a few more "perks" (e.g., the time on the display....who knew I'd ever miss it?), but for the steal/price, I simply cannot find enough to whine about to make me regret the purchase. I'm not a big Magnovox fan - I'm a Sony-aholic....but truth be told, if it didn't say Magnavox on the unit, I'd be none the wiser!

 "Worth The Price" 2010-02-02
By Rob Haines
The Good:

Great picture and resolution for the money. Adequate features and super easy setup. Analog image is excellent, and switching display settings is very simple. HDTV is as good as any major brand.

The Bad:

Why is it inexpensive? A few reasons: 1st, no VGA-in port. If you want to connect via VGA for your pc or laptop you're out of luck. Remote is cheap and lacks features. Does take about 1/2 second to switch between channels, but the channel display is a non-issue.

The Ugly:

No optical audio output. Major bummer for connecting older receivers. I bought this for my studio/media room, but without an optical out it's not what I planned. My bad for not checking, but, still a decent upgrade from my old 32" 1st gen lcd.

Overall Opinion:

All in all you get a good quality, Japanese-made lcd tv (with less ports) for a great low price. The onscreen channel display really isn't an issue near as much the lack of in- and out-puts. If you use HDMI exclusively that's not really an issue, 3 HDMI's are more than adequate. Remote is basic, but overall easy setup and excellent picture on this tv is a win for the budget-conscious consumer.

 "Fantastic HDTV!" 2009-12-10
By M. McPherson (Yucaipa, CA)
I don't know if I have a different model than the first reviewer, but I have none of the issues that were written about. My menus disappear quickly and are easy to navigate. Got this tv setup by running the channel programming, and then I set it up on a desk before I wall mounted it. I was watching NFL football in HD 1080i and it's amazing!! The colors are bright and true, and I hate to say, truer color than my more expensive Samsungs, not to say they aren't great tv's also, but the crispness of the picture and black levels are awesome. What I also like about this tv, is that you can change the screen mode, and it keeps the setting for regular tv not in HD, it will keep the wide mode, which fills the 16:9 screen with no black sidebars, yet when on an HD channel, it will display true 16:9 HDTV format. Also, on some LCDTVs, regular tv broadcasts look like crap, but not on this set, regular tv is smooth and good looking, and not pixelated and jagged. I am very picky about lcdtvs, I took back a Visio after I got it home and it looked horrible compared to my Samsungs. This TV is made by Funai, who also makes Phillips and Sylvania sets, and it certainly ranks up there with the best in picture quality, and for less money. I fully recommend this TV.

"Nice product - but one annoying feature" 2009-06-08
By S. Winthrop (San Jose, CA)
I guess I should have changed the channel while I was staring at this TV in the showroom. Every time you change the channel an annoying (and LARGE) menu screen pops up that obliterates the top-left corner of the screen with:

1) The name of the show being televised (not bad)

2) The type of format display you selected as your default (Zoom In, Automatic, 14.x display, etc.,) I don't really need to be reminded.

3) The LANGUAGE mode you selected...come on...

This pop-up menu is LARGE and blocks out a very big portion of the picture. It also takes too long to load and disappear - so it's very annoying while 'surfing' through channels.

I looked through the manual to see if there is a way of disabling this feature; but alas, I couldn't find one. I'll call Customer Support and if the popup cannot be disabled - I'm considering returning it.

"Best Value, Great Quality, and Unique Features" 2010-03-10
By N. Kujawski (Lincoln, RI USA)
My wife and I bought ours a couple of weeks ago and I don't think we could've found a better value. The picture quality on HD is great, PLENTY of inputs and input types (I hookup my laptop with the HDMI and play games via wireless keyboard and mouse which is quite an entertainment experience).

We use the iPod/iPhone hookup when doing housework or just hanging around. Having our 250w stereo hooked up makes it simple (no wires) to listen to our music at good quality. The built-in speakers are fine for watching shows but for movies I'd recommend using a surround or other sound system.

One thing to note, we bought ours at a local retailer and the first one we had to return because there was something wrong with the input where it was showing some channels as complete static but the replacement has had zero problems aside from I can't stop watching it!

 "Good TV over all" 2010-02-20
By D. Suidikas (Lubbock, TX)
We ordered this TV for my Dad who is 86 years old. The main thing we went for was the sound since he is very hard of hearing. We based our decision on other reviews giving it good marks on sound quality. Also, Consumer Reports had rated it better than average on sound. Fancy features were not important in our decision; ease of use was. It has a user friendly menu and was easy to program. The TV came from NY and travelled 2/3 the way across the country in 5 days (NY to TX). The seller (J&R Music World) added extra protective packaging and the unit arrived safe and sound.

"Could be better. Good price for 42 inch." 2009-12-29
By Router user
I am comparing the JVC to a 40 inch sony that was about the same price. I am by no means an expert when it comes to flat panel TV's.

I did not buy from this site. One of the national clubs has a better return policy. I purchased the sony and JVC at the same time. I am returning the JVC. The Sony controls and remote are superior in most aspects. A plus for the JVC is that it can control multible boxes. I can use the remote to control a Panasonic VCR.

Most of what I have to say are based on using QAM on Comcast (no cable box). With the switch to all digital I found that Comcast in my area (northern suburb of Chicago) has put the digital starter stations on QAM. This means if you have a QAM digital tuner on the TV you can get these stations. Almost all large screen TV's have QAM. I also get HD on the broadcast channels as part of the basic service.

The Sony found the stations (about 100 of them) and put them in a fairly logical order. It is harder to switch digital station on the JVC remote because because of the key placement for sub-channels. I have not seen any reviews that address the time it takes to change stations. The slow speed of changing stations on the JVC is the main reason I am returning it. This is not a TV for a channel surfer. Even switching between input sources was very slow.

It does manage the switching between wide screen and 4:3 very well. Much better than the sony.

The JVC had an Ipod dock. My teenage sons really like this, they were disappointed when I told them I was returning it. I thought the quality of watching IPOD videos on the TV was poor but I am not part of the IPOD generation.

If I was only using the tv through a cable box I don't know that wouldn't be more favorable toward the JVC. It is a larger screen for the same amount of money and the slow channel changing would not be an issue.

"Brief review of LG 42LH90" 2010-05-04
By Walt Wagner (Raleigh, NC)
There are more detailed reviews before this one so I choose not to be redundant. Set-up is easy and the remote is simple and easy to use. This LCD has full array LED backlighting. The real thin LED sets are using edge lighting with diffusers. They are OK but the light is not always evenly dispersed. It appears more mfgs are using edge lighting since it is probably less costly to produce and the sets are much thinner. Either way, the LCD sets with LED backlighting give you an amazing picture. Sound quality is average as most of thr newer sets seem to be designed for use with a separate sound system. The frame of the 42LH90 is not as narrow as other sets thus making it look king of bulky for a 42 inch set. The pedestal mount that comes with the unit is somewhat wobbly. It is a buyers market right now so you should be able to get a local retailer to offer the set for the same price as on line. I did. Expect to pay $1000 to $1100 right now (early May 2010). That's not much money for a 42 inch LED, 1080p, 120Hz(quasi 240Hz) HDTV.

 "very good tv" 2010-04-30
By John J. Hall (San Francisco, Ca United States)
The 42LH90 is a very good TV. Very good picture. A little blooming, I just listened to some advice in other reviews to calibrate the tv myself. I used the STANDARD selection as my jumping off point. I really didn't realize that some people on TV look so bad. The picture quality is really good. I have it connected to my own audio system. Swivel stand is great. I had an LG 42 inch, 720p, 1100 to 1 resolution from 3 or 4 yrs ago. This TV is quite lighter, throws off less heat and has a more superior picture. I hope the quality and durability is the same. So far, so good.

"Great HD TV for its Price!" 2010-04-13
By J. Crecca (NJ)
I have been looking around for a 1080p TV for a long time to upgrade my room and I finally came to buy this TV and I would never look back. I wanted a TV good for gaming, has great picture clarity, and of course good HD playback whether it be Blu-Ray or HD channels on cable. This TV has lived up to all of my expectations that I had for it except for one problem. The 240Hz "TruMotion" even when on low has some distorting effect on moving background images. Usually nothing that takes a lot away from the overall picture and nothing that lasts more than a couple seconds but I always seem to find those things. I am convinced it is the 240Hz considering I have watched the same movies on 120Hz 1080p LED TV and there was only very slight distortions. When playing a Blu-Ray on 1080p, it is less noticeable than if you where watching HBO HD or some other Cable TV HD channel.

Picture clarity and brightness are phenomenal! We have the Samsung 55" LED set downstairs and when I compared it almost looked like this LG was brighter and was more clear when playing a Blu-Ray disc, or playing a PS3 game. Sound quality is very good of built in speakers. Usually I can't let it go over 40 otherwise it is too loud when comparing it to the Samsung, sometimes we need to put the volume all the way up to 85-90.

Overall I am very happy with this TV for the price that I paid for it, I just bought a new Blu Ray player to replace my Samsung P1500, I will be hooking up a Panasonic DMP-DB85K later this week to see if it will make any difference in Blu-Ray clarity. So far the best movie that I have watched on this TV picture-wise is District 9... watched that yesterday and WOW it was an amazingly clear, crisp and bright picture.

If you are looking for a closer to budget priced 1080p LED TV this would be the TV you should consider.

EDIT:

2 days ago I hooked up my Panasonic DMP-DB85K Blu Ray player and I will say there is a a slight difference over my older Samsung model. I went through the settings on the DVD player and turned on the 24p setting (plays the dvd at 24 frames per second which is what movies are recorded in) and there was a good difference in playback.

I also played around with some settings in the picture menu, about the distortion about black edges/images... I turned the "Black Level" setting to High and I keep TruMotion 240hz to Low and I notice that there is less distortion on Blu Ray play back. I will continue to play around with some settings and see if there can be any more changes I can make.

 "it's what I expected" 2010-03-21
By Thomas Lund (Durand Wi USA)
I did alot of reserch before I bought and so far I'm impressed. This was the second major purchase from Amazon, the other being a Panasonic home theater, and have had no problems. The television has a great picture and I even like 240hz option. It is a soap opera effect, but I like that in some applications. I like the ability to tweek the settings(that's my thing)and get the picture the way I like it. I have had this set about a month and so far so good.I would recommend this tv to somebody who likes a step up tv and a good price. Shipping was ok,came well protected.

 "LG 42LH90" 2010-03-03

No Complaints so far. Just recommend you take the time to customize the picture setting for your specific viewing environment. Use the advanced setting, for me the picture was a bit dark right out of the box but with a little trial and error I am now satisfied. I purchased this TV through Amazon from Vanns and had great service.

"First Visio, not bad at all." 2010-05-13
By S. Vela (Vernon Hill, Illinois)
This is my first LCD and first Visio. I must say it is all I expected in an LCD. This VT420M satisfies my thirst for viewing movies at home. It doesn't have a whole lot of bells and whistles, but the picture is awesome.

 "Love my new Vizio" 2010-01-26
By Anita M. Wilson (Erie, PA)
My Vizio 42" HDTV is just the right size for my living room. Picture quality is excellent for HD programs and very good on others. I purchased a Vizio soundbar and sub-woofer to provide a fuller sound, and I am very satisfied with the results. I had planned to purchase a Sony Bravia, but it has a lot more features that I didn't need and didn't want to pay for. I'm happy with my Vizio.

"Did everything I wanted it to do." 2010-01-17
By Scuro (San Antonio, TX)
Was going to get a phillips tv but was sold out so I looked at the vizio. build quality looked solid and everything worked as it should. Havent had any issues thus far. Only thing that will ever show that the tv was cheaper then normal is the manual with its cheap photos but thats nothing to complain about.

Also to fix the change in volume from the speakers turn off the srs true volume. It tends to over correct the volume and thus creates the random volume levels.

"VIZIO vt420m great bang for your buck" 2010-01-05
By Oscar D. Garcia (San Jose,ca)
I tried really hard to find a comparable difference between SONY , SAMSUNG, VIZIO on tvs under 800 dollars. I couldn't find one. I stared at all three televisions for 45 minutes straight...not a considerable difference. For the money, you can't go wrong. its the right balance of size, picture quality and price. I hooked up my ps3 to compare the quality between this tv and a 46" xbr from SONY. I was shocked to see that this tv had by far produced a better picture (although the sony is 2 years old). Audio is poor and does fluctuate from time to time. I've had it for a month and cant say that I've seen any green lines or issues. If you wan't a television under 1000 dollars, i would highly recommend you take a look at this vizio. I don't think vizio can hold a candle when it gets to the higher priced tv's, but when it competes in this price range...it excels

 "Absolute Nightmare" 2009-11-16
By Mathew P. Sewell (Sioux Falls, SD)
I bought my Vizio after my first SONY HDTV died after only 1 year of service. I decided that I would purchase a Vizio as it was far cheaper than a Sony and I couldn't really see what was worth paying more money if the tv would be dead within 1 year anyways.

Well, it started out alright. First day with it was fine. The second day, however, the picture would begin to flicker, then go completely black, once or twice a day. It was fixed by simply turning the tv off and then on, but was still very annoying. However, the problem only got worse, and fast, degrading to the point that the picture would go out nearly once every fifteen minutes over the course of the next week. I contacted Vizio and they had no ready solution and wanted me to send my tv out for up to two months so they could try to find out what was wrong. I had absolutely no desire to ditch the tv for two months, and so I said thanks but no thanks.

I have never had a good experience with and HDTV, but Vizio is the only one that was absolute crap right-out-of-the-box. I Was so frustrated I could have cried. I've now spent $3,0000 on HDTV's in the past 2 years and every single one has died in less than 12 months, but the Vizio went to crap the fastest.
